How AI detectors actually work
Detectors look for statistical fingerprints - low variation in sentence length, predictable word choice, a certain machine smoothness. The trouble is that careful human writing shares those traits, and edited AI writing loses them. The signal is weak, so the verdict is really a probability dressed up as a fact.
Where they fail
- False positives: plain, clear human writing - especially from non-native English speakers - gets flagged as AI, with real consequences in schools and workplaces.
- False negatives: a few edits, one paraphrase pass, or a different model defeats most detectors.
- No standard: two detectors often disagree on the same passage, and none publish an audited accuracy rate you can trust.
- Easy to game: the same paraphrasing tools that rewrite for SEO also strip the fingerprints detectors look for.
A detector score is evidence, not proof. Treating a percentage as a verdict has already cost students and writers unfairly, so never let one number decide.
What to do instead
If you need to know whether work is original, look at process, not a score: drafts, version history, and whether the author can explain their choices. If you are publishing, focus on whether the writing is accurate and good, which matters far more than how it was made.
